Manchester United tried to sign Welsh midfielder Gareth Bale this summer, Real Madrid president Florentino Perez has confirmed.
No official bid was made for the ex-Tottenham Hotspur man, according to Perez, but they did show interest in making the move happen.
Having sold Angel di Maria to Paris Saint-Germain, Luis Nani to Turkish side Fenerbahce and sent Adnan Januzaj on a season-long loan to Borussia Dortmund, Louis van Gaal is now short of options on the right-hand side; where Gareth Bale plays for Los Blancos.
United were unsuccessful in recruiting Bale twice previously; Sir Alex Ferguson attempted to lure him to the club as a teenager from Southampton and David Moyes had a world-record bid turned down by Daniel Levy just before the player left Spurs for Spain. Louis van Gaal is now the third United manager to show an interest in the Welsh talisman but not (yet) succeed in bringing him to Old Trafford.
Anthony Martial is expected to play in the wide position due to his pace, but a mercurial player such as Bale would have suited United down to the ground.
