Manchester United are set to go head-to-head with Premier League rivals Arsenal for the signature of one of La Masia’s finest products, claim The Daily Star.
Central midfielder Sergi Samper, who played for the first team in Wednesday night’s Copa del Rey tie against Villanovense. The game ended goalless as a Manchester United scout watched on.
The 20-year-old Spanish midfielder comes at a bargain price of £8.5 million (€11.4 million) – with that being the amount stated as his release clause in his current contract.
He is a deep-lying central midfielder with exceptional passing range and vision – much in the vein of veteran Michael Carrick, now 34. The young Barcelona star would be a perfect replacement for Carrick but United will first need to keep him away from Arsenal boss, Arsene Wenger, who is thought to be a huge fan of the midfielder.
His involvement in the Copa del Rey this week was his first appearance of the season for Barcelona’s senior team, coming after just four appearances outside of Barca B in 2014/15.
