Manchester United manager Louis Van Gaal is desperate to continue to sign youth players, with Leeds United’s Lewis Cook his number one target for the January transfer window, according to ESPN.
The 18-year-old has been dubbed ‘the next Paul Scholes’ and also impressed Premier League quartet Chelsea, Manchester City, Arsenal and Liverpool when they sent scouts to watch the York-born midfielder.
Despite announcing his intentions to leave in 2017, Van Gaal wants to build a side for the future at Old Trafford, and needs to move quickly in order to beat his Premier League rivals to the signing of last season’s Championship Apprentice of the Year.
After a phenomenal campaign in 2014/15, Leeds tied Cook down to a new long-term contract. However, the Elland Road club’s resolve is poised to be tested in the winter transfer window – perhaps by more than one club.
The England U18 international has established himself as a key member of Steve Evans’ squad already this season and the former Rotherham boss could be left with a huge gap to fill in midfield should he leave. Any deal will, more than likely, see Cook return to Leeds United until, at least, the end of the season.
