Manchester United have had the way cleared for them to sign French national team striker, Karim Benzema, according to Spanish newspaper El Confidencial.
The Red Devils have been known suitors of the Real Madrid striker from when they tried to beat the Spanish club to his signature when he was a young player at Lyon in Ligue 1. Now, with the team needing goals, they could finally get their man.
El Confidencial say that in light of recent events, Real Madrid want the striker out of the club. He has been involved in a blackmail scandal surrounding Mathieu Valbuena, who plays alongside Benzema for the French national team.
The Spanish outlet also say that United were interested in the striker last summer – but he was valued at £43 million, which put the Old Trafford hierarchy off, as well as those looking at him from Arsenal and Paris Saint-Germain.
Given recent events, however, he is considered much less valuable and Los Blancos are looking for someone to buy Benzema with haste.
Whilst a move back to France with Paris Saint Germain could tempt Benzema, he may also relish the opportunity to link up with Anthony Martial at Manchester United. If he were to join the Red Devils in January, he and Martial could strike up a partnership ahead of next summer’s European Championship tournament, which will take place in France.
