United went in for ex-Atleti star

Manchester United made an attempt to now-Barcelona midfielder, Arda Turan, in 2014, whilst he was still an Atletico Madrid player.

According to his agent, (via Turkish publication AMK), Ahmet Bulut, Louis van Gaal wanted the Turkish attacker to be part of his re-build at Old Trafford – and made a bid for him:

“Last season Manchester United made a bid for Arda but Atletico Madrid did not want him to leave.”

The Turkish international of course has since moved to current Spanish and European champions, Barcelona – but it yet to play for the Catalan giants. This is because of the transfer ban imposed upon the Camp Nou side due to misconduct in signing under-eighteen year old players. Also waiting for his first appearance in a Barcelona shirt is Aleix Vidal. The pair will finally be allowed to play in January.

Had Arda been allowed to leave Atletico Madrid for Manchester United, he presumably would have played on the right wing at Old Trafford – meaning a central role for Juan Mata, with Wayne Rooney used as Louis van Gaal’s lone striker; so Anthony Martial may never have made the switch from Monaco last summer.

28-year-old Turan has played 477 games in his career, for Galatasaray, Manisaspor and Atletico Madrid, as well as his national team. He has scored eighty-five goals in these games. This is an average of a goal every 5.6 games. This season, Manchester United’s top scorer, Wayne Rooney, has scored seven goals in twenty appearances – one goal ever 2.8 games. Turan would certainly improve United in an attacking sense, and is a strong player on the back foot too.
