Sam Johnstone has rejoined Preston North End, the club he helped gain promotion to the Championship last season on a month long deal, Manchester United confirmed on the club’s website today.
The 22-year-old played 25 times for Preston, keeping 12 clean sheets including one in the League One play-off final in a 4-0 victory over Swindon at Wembley in May this year. They are currently 17th in the Championship. He is needed at Deepdale after Sunderland’s decision to recall Jordan Pickford from a season-long loan and is available for Saturday’s game against Rotherham.
Johnstone is happy to return to the club his father played for in the 1990’s. Speaking to Preston’s official website he said:
I’m delighted to be back and hopefully I can start playing some games, It’s great to be around the team at Manchester United, they are the biggest club in the world but at the end of the day, I’m 22 years old and I have to think about myself a little bit and I need to be playing first-team football. I get to do that now in the Championship which is a great league to play in.
He continued:
My last game for Preston was at Wembley, it only feels like it was yesterday, it was a great day, but now we’ve got to kick on. I’ve seen the results that the lads have been getting recently and hopefully we can carry that on.
He joins ex-United player Marnick Vermijl who is also on loan at Preston from Sheffield Wednesday.
