Under-21 striker joins Barnsley on loan

Manchester United striker Ashley Fletcher has joined League One side Barnsley on a month-long loan.

The 20-year-old has recently returned from injury and had been ever-present in Warren Joyce’s Under-21 side this season.

The highlight of the youngster’s season so far has been the hat-trick he scored against Rochdale in the Lancashire Senior Cup in September, where he showed his finishing ability with three composed finishes.

Fletcher becomes the third United player to head to Oakwell on loan this season, after Ben Pearson and Joe Rothwell were also loaned to Lee Johnson’s side earlier in the campaign.

It will be the Keighley-born striker’s first time away from Old Trafford and he will go straight into Barnsley’s squad for their Johnstone’s Paint Trophy Area Final first leg against Fleetwood at the weekend.

Fletcher has expressed his excitement at the move in an interview on Barnsley’s official website. He said:

I’m buzzing to be here. I’ve come to get some league experience and help improve the team.

I’m looking forward to this weekend. Fleetwood are a good side and it will be a good test but with the quality we’ve got here, I’m sure we can do the business.

Having trained with the lads this morning, I can see the quality that they bring to the club.

Tykes manager Lee Johnson was also pleased with the capture, saying:

I’m really pleased to bring Ashley in. We are very grateful to Manchester United for entrusting us to develop another one of their future stars in Ashley.

We are all looking forward to working with him and I’m sure he’ll have a positive effect on the team.
