Manchester United made a world-record bid for Bayern Munich’s Thomas Müller in the last summer transfer window, according to Bayern chief executive Karl-Heinz Rummenigge.
The Reds had been heavily linked with a move for the attacker by the English press in the summer of 2014 and the Bayern chief has now admitted that an official bid was put in by United, who were managed by former Bayern boss Louis van Gaal at the time.

However, speaking to German paper Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung (as quoted by Sky Sports), Rummenigge said that the bid was not considered for one second and that Muller was indispensable to the club:
We had a mad offer from Manchester United last year, which was not a topic for one second. We could have secured a world-record transfer fee.
Thomas Muller came out of (the youth academy). (He is) born near Munich, formed here, the hero of the fans.
Müller has since signed a new contract with Bayern lasting until 2019, but the move would have made sense from a United perspective. After all, Van Gaal had given the 26-year-old his big break at Bayern and Müller had been quoted as praising the Dutchman as a “genius technician” and a manager that makes players “improve every time”.
However, it was always going to be an unlikely move – given United’s situation then and even now – but it shows that United do have money to spend if necessary.
