Oxford United have signed Manchester United midfielder Joe Rothwell on a free transfer.
The United academy product has signed a two year deal with the League One outfit after spending 15 years in the Reds’ youth set-up.
Rothwell never made an appearance for United but was one of many youngsters that were involved in the first team squad at some point last season, with the midfielder being named as a substitute for the home win against Watford in March.
The midfielder made nine appearances for the under-21 side that won their age group’s Premier League title last season, as well as playing seven times for Barnsley in a brief loan spell.
Rothwell has just ten professional appearances to his name but, having played in the Championship and League One already, the 21-year-old will be confident of continuing his development in the third tier with Oxford.
Rothwell made three appearances on loan at Blackpool in the 2014-15 season and has made 16 appearances for England across various age categories, scoring once at under-16 level.
