Manchester United vs Aston Villa: Mason Mount set to return

Manchester United reportedly have Mason Mount back fit and available for this Sunday’s encounter with Aston Villa. The English midfielder has been sidelined since late January after picking up an injury in training.

Mount’s game time decreased when available after Michael Carrick replaced Ruben Amorim. He settled for a bit-part role in wins over Manchester City (2-0) and Arsenal (3-2).

The 27-year-old has endured an injury-ridden spell at Old Trafford and another spell on the sidelines has been a massive setback. But he is likely to be included in the squad Carrick chooses to face Villa at the Theatre of Dreams.

Mount’s return has come at a crucial stage of the season amid United’s chase for UEFA Champions League qualification. They sit third, ahead of tomorrow’s clash with Villa, who are level on points in fourth but with a worse goal difference.

According to CentreDevils, the former Chelsea man will likely be included in Carrick’s squad. If that’s the case, he should make the bench against the Villans.

Mount will give his coach a vital option in the final stretch of the season. Despite a lack of midweek football, some of his players have looked leggy and his creativity will be useful.

The versatile Englishman has appeared 19 times across competitions during the campaign, posting three goals and one assist. He was an Amorim favourite and some ponder whether he’ll have a future at the club if Carrick is kept on.

Mount’s future subject of speculation

Manchester United signed Mount from Chelsea back in the summer of 2023 for £60m. He arrived following an impressive spell at Stamford Bridge, playing a key role in the Blues’ 2021 Champions League win.

Injuries have plagued him throughout his time at Old Trafford and that’s been the case this season. He struggles to get a run of games under his belt due to fitness issues.

Recent reports claim that United are open to selling Mount for the right price. He ironically has interest from Villa as well, and a return to London with Fulham is another possibility.

Mount is thought to want to stay at the club and prove his worth. He will have two years left on his contract this summer and doesn’t look likely to claim a starting role in Carrick’s team.
