- Ex-Manchester United star has not impressed at Chelsea
- Winger is failing to get extensive playtime
- Chelsea is concerned about his performances
Former Manchester United Chief Scout Mick Brown has revealed that Chelsea are “concerned” over Alejandro Garnacho’s performance in a blue shirt so far.
Brown suggested that the Blues are enduring the same problems that ensued during Garnacho’s time at Old Trafford. He told Football Insider:
“There were issues with him during his time at Man United that it seems are coming up again now at Chelsea, both on and off the pitch. He never looked completely committed on the pitch, he’s not the sort of player to get his head down, work hard and battle to get into a game.
Brown added:
“And in the final third, he’s wasteful, he’s not giving anywhere near the end product you would hope for a player who was bought for £40M.”
Garnacho’s time at United ended unceremoniously, with the winger leaving in disgrace after feuding with former boss Ruben Amorim.
In the aftermath of the Europa League final—which United pitifully lost 1-0 to Tottenham Hotspur—Amorim singled out the Argentine, stating, “You better pray that you can find a club to sign you.”
With few elite clubs willing to meet Manchester United’s price for Garnacho, the winger reportedly declared, “It’s either Chelsea or I stay here and don’t play football for 6–12 months.”
Garnacho Struggles to Shine
Since signing for Chelsea last August, Garnacho has struggled to impress for the London club. Making 36 appearances, he’s managed seven goals and four assists.
Not terrible on paper, but with three of those goals coming against sub‑par second‑division opposition, the numbers lose a bit of their shine. The figures look even worse when you realise that four of his seven goals came in the EFL Cup, leaving him with just one goal each in the Premier League, Champions League, and FA Cup.
For a player who cost £40 million, those stats are simply not good enough. Unfortunately, for Garncho and Chelsea fans, his all-around game has been particularly good.
The Argentine sits in the 98th percentile for progressive carries and the 92nd percentile for completed dribbles in the attacking phase. The problem is that he isn’t turning any of it into meaningful impact.
Garnacho’s performance in front of goal has been underwhelming. From a possible 3.78 expected Premier League goals (xG), he has managed to score just one—a negative xG of 2.78.
United Fans Turn Up the Heat
Manchester United fans have been quick to notice Garnacho’s sudden decline in form.
After being hailed as one of United’s brightest prospects, Garnacho’s attitude in his final months at the club strained his relationship with the fanbase.
Meanwhile, many fans have been quick to praise Matheus Cunha, whom they view as an upgrade on their former winger.
Garnacho will next face his former club on 22 April, as both sides, meanwhile, look to secure qualification for the 2026/27 UEFA Champions League.
