Barcelona left-back Alejandro Balde has attracted serious interest from Manchester United, with other Premier League sides, including rivals Manchester City also keen, per Mundo Deportivo.

Despite interest from the two Premier League sides, as well as Champions League-chasing Aston Villa, Balde’s agent, Jorge Mendes, has indicated that he has no intention of leaving Barcelona, with the Spaniard claiming, “he feels at home.”

At present, it appears that only financial considerations would force a departure. With renewal talks expected in the coming months, any move away from Spain would likely require a substantial offer capable of offsetting the club’s financial constraints.

The shift towards tomorrow’s stars

With summer fast approaching, there are just 81 days until the summer transfer window opens on 15 June. One of Manchester United’s prerogatives for the summer is to strengthen their left-back position.

Whilst Luke Shaw has made a miraculous return to fitness this season—starting every single league match thus far—there are concerns over the Englishman’s athleticism and future availability.

In his 12 years in Manchester, Shaw has been injured on 29 separate occasions, totalling 2184 days sidelined, and 306 games missed for club and country.

Although he may be only 29 years old, the major recruitment strategy under minority owner Jim Ratcliffe has been to acquire young prospects who can grow into potential superstars.

This approach is evident in signings such as Leny Yoro, Joshua Zirkzee, Ayden Heaven, Patrick Dorgu, Senne Lammens and Benjamin Sesko.

All were 23 or younger at the time of their arrival, highlighting United’s commitment to building a squad with long-term potential while planning for the future beyond Shaw’s injury-prone years.

Balde fits right in with this group of players, with the left-back just 22-years-old.

Manchester United’s left-back search

Whilst it seems unlikely United will be able to prise Balde away from Barcelona’s grip, the short-list for a young, exciting left-back who can work efficiently on the overlap is growing by the day.

As it stands, these are the four names at the top of United’s left-back summer shoplist.

Balde appears the least attainable, with the player unwilling to leave Barcelona, while Brown emerges as the most realistic option, given Arsenal and Newcastle’s reluctance to sell their own to a league rival.
