- Louis Saha wants Tottenham star at Manchester United
- Van de Ven’s future uncertain
- A new defender could be on the cards
Manchester United icon Louis Saha has called on his former club to sign Tottenham Hotspur star Micky van de Ven. The centre-back has been a mainstay in the Lilywhites’ side this season, making 38 appearances across four competitions.
Van de Ven is known for his quick speed and aggressiveness, which have made him a leading young defender in English football. Liverpool have also been linked to the central defender in recent months.
The possibility of the Dutchman leaving could become greater if Spurs are relegated from the Premier League. However, Arne Slot’s side have already signed Jeremy Jacquet from Rennes for £60m.
Consequently, this could give United a free run if the player wants to remain in England. The North London club have just seven games to go to save their league status. If unsuccessful, it could lead to a mass exodus of players.
Spurs’ Van de Ven Takes United to ‘Next Level’
Saha was speaking to Ozoon (via SimplyUtd) and specifically mentioned the Spurs defender as someone that his former club should look at. The Frenchman knows all about playing for the Red Devils, having won the Champions League with the Reds in 2008. He is fondly remembered by United faithfuls.
The former French striker said: “We have options in attack and on the wings, and defensively there are plenty of choices, but Micky van de Ven would be an exciting signing if he’s available, he’s the kind of player who can help take Manchester United to the next level.”
With the fitness of centre-back Matthijs De Ligt a concern and Harry Maguire reportedly only being offered a one-year extension, United could look at a defender for the future alongside Leny Yoro.
Saha on United’s priorities this summer
Saha also outlined his views on the key areas the club will focus on this summer. United are set for a major shake-up in midfield, with key departures, including Casemiro. The futures of players such as Bruno Fernandes and Manuel Ugarte, linked with Serie A, are still unclear.
He said: “Central midfield is a priority for Manchester United in the transfer market, especially if Casemiro leaves. But we still need more athleticism in that area. We need a player who can dominate across the pitch, someone similar in profile to Declan Rice; capable of offering a lot while also being physically strong.”
The Red Devils missed out on Rice a few seasons ago as he was deemed too expensive at the time. Arsenal moved in for the player, who has become a pillar for The Gunners and England.
It echoes a similar situation with Harry Kane, who, when Erik ten Hag was the manager, was very keen on bringing him to the club from Spurs. Therefore, United should not wait for the ship to sail on van de Ven. Spurs will be desperate to get their biggest names off their wage bills if they are relegated. At a cut-price fee, the Dutchman would be an ideal signing for the present and the future.
