- Man Utd keen on Sam Johnstone
- Red Devils want to replace Andre Onana
- Wolves want two new goalkeepers
Manchester United are reportedly keen on bringing Sam Johnstone back to Old Trafford. The Wolverhampton Wanderers goalkeeper started his career with the Red Devils.
According to Alan Nixon on Patreon, United are keen on making Johnstone Michael Carrick‘s new number two shot-stopper. Given he spent his youth days at Carrington, there is a belief he could be tempted to return as an experienced reserve.
Johnstone started the season as Wolves’ number one before losing his place to Jose Sa. The veteran Englishman settled for a place on the bench for months before sitting out the final period due to a shoulder injury.
Man Utd eyeing Sam Johnstone
Nixon claims that Johnstone wants to be in the North East at this stage of his career. He’s willing to settle for competing for game time and the possibility of featuring in domestic cup competitions.
Wolves are keen on signing two new goalkeepers after suffering relegation. That helps aid United if they do decide to try and sign the 33-year-old.
Johnstone appeared 12 times in the league, failing to keep a single clean sheet and conceding 24 goals. He joined the Molineux outfit from Crystal Palace back in August 2024 for £10m.
Onana replacement
United’s interest in Johnstone stems from their desire to move on Andre Onana. The Cameroonian spent the season out on loan in Turkiye.
Onana was an ever-present for Trabzonspor in the Turkish Super Lig, getting his career back on track. The 30-year-old flopped at Old Trafford after joining from Inter Milan in a £47.2m deal in July 2023.
Trabzonspor are keen to sign Onana permanently and are in the process of trying to pull off a deal. He’s not the only shot-stopper whose days at United look numbered, as Altay Bayindir also looks set to join Besiktas.
