Manchester United Handed Hull City Away Opener After Old Trafford Pitch Request

Manchester United will start the 2026/27 Premier League season away at Hull City after their request for extra Old Trafford preparation time was granted.

The fixture list sends Michael Carrick’s side to the MKM Stadium on Saturday 22 August before United return home to face Ipswich Town.

The request was made because major pitch work is taking place at Old Trafford during the summer. United needed the opening weekend clear to complete the final phase before supporters return.

It means Carrick will not begin his first full season as permanent head coach in front of an unfinished home surface.

The schedule still gives United a quick home deadline, though. Ipswich are due at Old Trafford just a week later.

Why The Hull Opener Matters For Carrick And United

The football context is just as important as the stadium work.

Hull are newly promoted, giving United a fixture they will be expected to control. But an away opener always carries edge, especially at a promoted club with momentum and a loud home crowd.

Carrick will want a clean first statement before the early rhythm tightens.

United also face Ipswich, Everton and Fulham before September’s international break. The Manchester derby against City is already marked for 12 September.

ReadManUtd has already looked at why Michael Carrick’s easy Man Utd start now comes with real pressure, and the Hull opener fits that theme.

A strong start would change the mood around a squad heading back into Champions League football.

The Old Trafford detail is the immediate hook. The Sun reports United had their fixture request granted because of the pitch work, leaving Carrick’s side to open on the road before the first home test.

Now United have to make sure the football looks as organised as the planning.
