Manchester United are close to agreeing terms with Trabzonspor for Andre Onana to spend another season on loan in Turkey.
That would be another significant step in United’s goalkeeper reset.
Onana spent last season on loan at Trabzonspor after United reshaped the position with Senne Lammens, Tom Heaton and Altay Bayindir all part of the wider picture.
Reuters reported in September that Onana completed his original loan move after United signed Lammens from Royal Antwerp, leaving the club with four senior goalkeepers.
Carrick Gets One Less Awkward Goalkeeper Problem
For Michael Carrick, the logic is obvious.
Onana returning to sit on the bench would create noise around the goalkeeper group before the season even begins.
A second Trabzonspor loan would remove that tension and allow United to keep building around Lammens as the clear No.1, with Heaton offering experience and dressing-room stability.
ReadManUtd has already covered how Tom Heaton’s new deal points towards a clear United role, and Onana’s likely exit would make that structure easier to understand.
United do not need another summer of uncertainty around the position.
They need clarity, calm and a goalkeeping department that supports Carrick’s tactical rebuild rather than distracting from it.
If Trabzonspor take Onana for another season, the deal will not erase the mistakes of United’s original investment.
But it would give the club a cleaner route forward.
