Manchester United have been beaten to Mateus Fernandes, with Tottenham now understood to have agreed an £85million deal for the West Ham United midfielder.
Sky Sports report that United pushed hard for the 21-year-old but refused to reach the price Spurs were prepared to pay, while also needing clarity that Fernandes actively wanted the Old Trafford move.
The Portuguese midfielder has been given permission to undergo a Tottenham medical.
The Guardian also report that Spurs have moved ahead of United, Arsenal and Real Madrid by meeting West Ham’s asking price after the Hammers’ relegation.
United Refuse To Chase £85m Fernandes Deal
This is a significant transfer setback, but not necessarily an irrational one.
United have already been trying to reshape Michael Carrick’s midfield around younger, more press-resistant profiles, yet £85million would have swallowed a major portion of the summer budget for a player still developing at senior international level.
Fernandes fitted the brief because of his carrying power, tempo control and Premier League exposure. The issue was always the fee. Once Tottenham made the deal a club-record statement, United’s decision became a test of discipline as much as ambition.
West Ham’s stance was strengthened by Fernandes’ contract value and by their need to raise funds after dropping into the Championship. United now have to pivot quickly, with midfield still an obvious priority before pre-season begins.
