Manchester United have formally informed Atalanta that they will not complete a deal for Éderson after concerns emerged during further medical checks.
United had agreed a fee worth around £38m for the Brazil midfielder, but the club decided not to proceed on the original terms. Fabrizio Romano reports that Atalanta have now offered Éderson a new contract until June 2031.
The 27-year-old has returned to Italy following Brazil’s World Cup exit and will discuss his future with Atalanta. He reportedly feels disappointed after the proposed Old Trafford move collapsed.
United accelerate Tielemans move
Michael Carrick has quickly redirected his midfield plans towards Youri Tielemans. Sky Sports reports that United have triggered a release clause worth around £36m in the Aston Villa midfielder’s contract.
United have reached a verbal agreement with Tielemans, who could undergo his medical at Carrington on Tuesday. The Belgium international would become Carrick’s second midfield addition after the £50m signing of Andrey Santos from Chelsea.
The switch represents a significant change in profile. Éderson would have added defensive power, ball-winning ability and athleticism, while Tielemans offers greater Premier League experience and more control in possession.
ReadManUtd’s latest midfield briefing examined the uncertainty surrounding Éderson and United’s alternative options. Carrick now appears ready to pair Tielemans with Santos rather than wait for fresh negotiations with Atalanta.
United have protected themselves from committing a major fee to a player whose medical information caused concern. However, they must now ensure Tielemans provides the balance Carrick needs rather than simply representing the quickest available alternative.
Completing the deal before pre-season begins would at least give the manager two new midfielders from the start of the summer programme.
