Manchester United could reportedly renew their interest in Brighton midfielder Carlos Baleba if the Seagulls significantly reduce their asking price.
United have admired Baleba for more than a year and remain aware of the midfielder’s willingness to move to Old Trafford.
However, price continues to block any serious progress.
According to TEAMtalk, Brighton no longer expect the £100million valuation attached to Baleba last summer. A deal could now cost around £70m, although United have not submitted a fresh approach or proposal.
Fabrizio Romano has described the situation as “a little bit cold”, despite Baleba retaining a strong desire to join Michael Carrick’s side.
Baleba remains too expensive for United
Pete O’Rourke has now claimed United could reconsider Baleba if Brighton provide encouragement that their valuation will fall further.
United are attempting to rebuild their midfield without allowing one deal to consume most of the available budget. A £70m package would still represent a major commitment for a player coming off an inconsistent campaign.
ReadManUtd previously examined why Brighton’s valuation had pushed Baleba down United’s midfield shortlist. The latest update does not fundamentally change that issue.
Baleba’s profile remains attractive. He offers ball-winning ability, physical coverage and Premier League experience, while still possessing considerable room to develop at 22.
United also need another midfielder following Casemiro’s departure and Manuel Ugarte’s injury. The expected arrival of Andrey Santos would add quality, but Carrick’s options would remain short of depth.
Baleba could return to the centre of United’s plans if Brighton move closer to the £50m region reportedly preferred by INEOS.
Until then, United’s admiration is unlikely to become an active pursuit. The player may want the transfer, but Brighton still control whether the numbers become realistic.
