Manchester United Trigger Tielemans Release Clause As Medical Begins

Manchester United have triggered Youri Tielemans’s release clause at Aston Villa, and the Belgium international is undergoing the first stage of his medical in Manchester on Tuesday as the club moves to complete a second midfield signing of the summer.

According to a fresh update from Fabrizio Romano, Tielemans travelled to Manchester on Monday evening and is working through his medical examinations before putting pen to paper on a long-term contract. Romano described the move as fully agreed, declaring “here we go” on a deal built around the €41m (£35m) release clause in the 29-year-old’s Villa contract. Sky Sports has separately reported that the finer details of the transfer were settled between the two clubs before Tielemans underwent his tests, with the Belgian expected to sign this week.

Michael Carrick Gains Second Midfield Reinforcement Of The Summer

The move gives Michael Carrick a second fresh face in central midfield, arriving weeks after United’s £50m deal to sign Andrey Santos from Chelsea. Because the fee is set by a release clause rather than a negotiated transfer, United have been able to move at pace once the trigger was activated, sidestepping the drawn-out talks that have characterised other targets this summer.

Tielemans’s medical also lands only a day after United confirmed their interest had cooled in a separate midfield target, with the club pulling out of a move for Ederson after the Atalanta midfielder failed elements of his own medical. That collapse appears to have accelerated the Tielemans deal rather than delayed it. Assuming this week’s tests are cleared, Carrick will have a proven Premier League midfielder — Tielemans made over 200 appearances for Leicester City and Villa combined — available to work into his side before United’s pre-season schedule intensifies.
