Manchester United’s pursuit of Manu Koné has reportedly been complicated by Chelsea’s renewed interest in the Roma midfielder.
United have contacted the France international’s representatives as they assess options for a third midfield addition this summer.
Fabrizio Romano reports that United called Koné’s camp to discuss his situation. However, talks have not yet developed into a formal offer to Roma.
Chelsea have now been linked with their own approach after holding separate discussions with the Italian club over Alejandro Garnacho and Diego Moreira.
The Blues previously tracked Koné and could provide serious competition if those initial conversations develop. Roma are willing to consider a sale, but their valuation leaves both Premier League clubs facing a major financial decision.
Koné fits Wilcox’s Manchester United plan
United have already added Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans to Carrick’s midfield.
Santos gives the team energy, ball-winning quality and the ability to carry possession. Tielemans offers greater control and creativity from deeper areas.
Jason Wilcox is now looking for a midfielder capable of covering large spaces and protecting the defence following Casemiro’s move to Inter Miami.
David Ornstein has described Koné as a potentially excellent signing and said United should have a clear vision for the profile they need.
The 25-year-old possesses the athletic qualities missing from Carrick’s current options. He can recover possession, resist pressure and drive forward with the ball.
As Read Man Utd recently examined, Koné is competing with João Gomes and Aurélien Tchouaméni for a place near the top of United’s shortlist.
Tchouaméni would be the most established option, but his wages and Real Madrid’s reluctance to sell create significant obstacles. Gomes offers Premier League experience, while Koné may provide the strongest balance between physical quality, age and availability.
Roma valuation gives United another decision
Roma reportedly rejected an offer worth €40m from Atletico Madrid earlier this summer.
The Serie A club are seeking closer to €60m, which equates to around £51m. Head coach Gian Piero Gasperini has also acknowledged that Roma need to balance their finances before the end of the transfer window.
TalkSPORT reports that Koné’s World Cup performances increased his value and strengthened Roma’s negotiating position.
A sale would generate a substantial profit after the midfielder arrived from Borussia Mönchengladbach in 2024.
United must now decide whether another deal above £50m represents the right use of their remaining budget. The club have already committed significant funds to Santos and Tielemans, while Carrick also wants additions in attack and at full-back.
Koné appears interested in moving to the Premier League, but Chelsea’s presence could remove any hope of United negotiating below Roma’s valuation.
Chelsea interest increases pressure on United
Chelsea’s reported involvement has emerged during discussions with Roma over other possible transfers.
The clubs have spoken about Garnacho and former Chelsea winger Moreira. Reports in Italy suggest those conversations allowed Koné’s situation to be discussed, although each move would be negotiated separately.
Chelsea’s need for another midfielder may depend on departures from Xabi Alonso’s squad. United’s requirement is more immediate following Casemiro’s exit and the collapse of their move for Ederson.
Koné was already becoming a central figure in the rebuild before Chelsea entered the race. Read Man Utd outlined why he suits Carrick’s midfield after concerns over Ederson’s medical sent United back into the market.
Carlos Baleba remains admired, but Brighton’s valuation has reduced the likelihood of a deal. Manchester City have also moved ahead in the pursuit of Lille teenager Ayyoub Bouaddi.
Koné therefore represents one of the most attainable high-level options still available.
United have made contact and understand Roma’s demands. Chelsea’s entry may now force Wilcox to decide whether to submit an offer or risk losing another midfield target.
