Man Utd suffer final Ederson blow after £35m transfer collapse

Manchester United’s hopes of reviving a move for Ederson appear to be over after the midfielder signed a new contract with Atalanta.

United agreed a £35m fee for the Brazil international at the beginning of June. The 27-year-old was expected to become one of Michael Carrick’s first summer signings.

However, the transfer was delayed after Ederson received a late call-up to Brazil’s World Cup squad. Initial medical checks in the United States later highlighted an area which required further assessment.

Ederson travelled to England following Brazil’s last-16 defeat by Norway and underwent additional examinations involving specialists. United subsequently decided not to complete the transfer.

Ederson extension ends Man Utd transfer hopes

There had been suggestions that United could revisit the deal later in the window on different financial terms.

However, Atalanta have now officially confirmed Ederson’s contract extension. The Serie A club did not reveal the length of the new agreement.

The announcement provides a decisive conclusion to a transfer which appeared close to completion only weeks ago.

Ederson has made 180 appearances for Atalanta since arriving in 2022. He also played a central role in their 2024 Europa League triumph.

United have already responded by completing midfield deals for Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans. Carrick still wants an additional player capable of providing defensive protection in central areas.

As Read Man Utd previously explained following the collapse of the transfer, Roma midfielder Manu Koné, Fulham’s Sander Berge and Bournemouth star Alex Scott are among the alternatives under consideration.

Ederson’s extension removes any remaining uncertainty over his immediate future. United must now focus entirely on other targets as Carrick looks to complete his midfield rebuild.
