Michael Carrick is excited about the opportunity to revive Marcus Rashford’s Manchester United career when the forward returns for pre-season.
Rashford is also looking forward to working with the United head coach after spending last season on loan at Barcelona.
Fabrizio Romano reports that both parties have agreed to give the relationship an opportunity before making a final decision over the England international’s future.
United could still sell Rashford if a suitable offer arrives. However, Carrick wants to assess the 28-year-old in training before the club commits to another permanent transfer decision.
Manchester United hand Rashford fresh opportunity
Rashford has not represented United since December 2024 following loan spells with Aston Villa and Barcelona.
Barcelona decided against completing a permanent deal this summer, while Rashford has shown little interest in offers from outside Europe’s leading leagues. He remains under contract at Old Trafford until June 2028.
ReadManUtd recently reported that staying at Manchester United had become the likeliest outcome because no suitable transfer market has developed.
Carrick’s position now gives Rashford a clear route back into the first-team squad. The head coach believes he can help the academy graduate rediscover the form which previously made him one of United’s most productive attackers.
Rashford’s future could also influence United’s remaining transfer business. The club may reduce its pursuit of another left-sided forward if he convinces Carrick during pre-season.
No long-term commitment has been made by either party. Rashford will receive an opportunity to rebuild his United career before the player and club decide whether they should continue together.
