Manchester United are considering a £40million move for Tottenham Hotspur full-back Djed Spence following his impressive World Cup campaign with England. Michael Carrick reportedly wants another full-back before the transfer window closes.
Spence emerged as one of England’s standout performers during their run to the semi-finals. His ability to play on either side of defence has now placed him firmly on United’s radar.
Football Insider reports that Carrick was impressed by Spence’s performances. United have monitored the 25-year-old closely as they assess options at left-back.
Tottenham are believed to value Spence at around £40million. Inter Milan previously explored a move but walked away after failing to meet the Premier League club’s demands.
Djed Spence could strengthen both sides of United defence
Spence would offer Carrick an athletic and versatile option. He can provide competition at right-back while also operating naturally from the left when required.
His aggressive defending, recovery pace and ability to carry possession could suit the more energetic team Carrick is building. However, United must decide whether £40million represents fair value for a player who has not always started regularly at Tottenham.
The club are also continuing their search for a defensive midfielder. United have made a fresh enquiry about Real Madrid’s Aurelien Tchouameni despite reports that he has agreed a new contract at the Bernabeu.
Tchouameni would provide a specialist holding presence alongside Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans. Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho reportedly wants to keep the France international, making a deal difficult to complete.
United could also submit an offer for Roma midfielder Manu Kone if Tchouameni remains unavailable.
Spence appears to be the more attainable target. His World Cup displays have strengthened his reputation, but United must first decide whether to meet Tottenham’s significant asking price.
