Mason Mount has opened up on his Manchester United leadership role after wearing the captain’s armband during the second half of Friday’s 5-0 victory over Rosenborg.
The midfielder believes he can guide the club’s younger players while leading through his performances.
Mount received the armband after Harry Maguire had captained Michael Carrick’s starting side in Trondheim.
“I think I’m definitely a leader,” Mount told the Manchester Evening News.
The 27-year-old explained that he prefers to lead by example rather than always being the loudest player. Mount also welcomed the responsibility of helping academy prospects feel comfortable in senior football.
United finished the match with an entirely academy-produced outfield team. Jacob Devaney, Harry Amass and Ethan Williams scored after the break, while Jaydan Kamason supplied two assists.

Mount said he had captained teams earlier in his career and described the responsibility as a role he enjoys.
His comments relate to a temporary pre-season appointment rather than a confirmed change to United’s permanent captaincy. However, Carrick clearly trusted Mount to manage a youthful team during the closing stages.
