Michael Carrick has admitted Manchester United are still looking to strengthen the squad before the transfer window closes.
Manchester United have already brought some new faces to the squad this summer, but Carrick believes there is still room to improve. A left-back and another midfielder are currently the main priorities as the club enters the final weeks of the window.
The United boss made it clear that the club won’t simply sign players for the sake of adding numbers. Any new arrival has to improve the squad.
“I think we’ve got a pretty good balance in all when you lay the squad out, but yeah, of course, we would like more”, Michael Carrick said.
“We would like more, we need to keep pushing for more.
“There are one or two areas where we’d like to improve and we feel that there’s the possibility to improve.
“But again, that needs to be something that we can do that makes us better and improves the group, whether that’s quality or whether that’s a little bit of depth.
“That’s something we’ve got to manage. That’s pretty obvious.”
Manchester United still searching for left-back and midfielder
One of the positions United are keen to address is left-back.
The club have held informal discussions with representatives of Newcastle’s Lewis Hall, although Newcastle have taken steps to push back against suggestions that the defender could leave.
Myles Lewis-Skelly has also been considered as another option. United are reportedly willing to look at the Arsenal youngster, but his current asking price is viewed as too expensive.
The midfield situation is slightly different. Manchester United made a fresh enquiry for Real Madrid’s Aurelien Tchouameni last month, while Carlos Baleba has been monitored by the club for more than a year.
With the Reds already having invested in midfield this summer, another addition would depend on Carrick and the recruitment team finding the right opportunity.
Carrick delighted with Santos and Tielemans
Carrick also offered strong praise for the two midfielders already brought into his squad.
Andrey Santos, in particular, has impressed the United boss with his attitude since arriving.
“Andrey, for such a young man to come in the way he’s come in, his character, his personality is a dream. Literally, he’s a dream.
“He’s so positive, so mature, so switched on. He wants to learn.
“He comes in straight away and he’s trying to help other players and talk in games and communicate in games, and has that personality where he’s got a real substance to him. Delighted to have him.”
Tielemans, meanwhile, brings a different type of quality given his experience.
“Youri’s a little bit more obvious, probably because we’ve seen an awful lot of him and we all know him.
“But again, the character, the personality, the presence, and the quality on top.
“But being a team player and understanding that and connecting everyone together, I think it’s important we got that right. The two midfielders in particular, I think it’ll give us an awful lot and will give us an awful lot moving forward.”
With the window entering its final weeks, the pressure is now on Manchester United to find the right players and get the deals done.
