Barcelona keep Marcus Rashford door open as United future remains uncertain

Barcelona have not completely given up on Marcus Rashford, despite choosing not to sign the Manchester United forward permanently this summer.

According to TEAMtalk, the Catalan club remain in contact with Rashford’s representatives and are still looking at ways to bring him back to the Camp Nou. Their preference has been another loan deal, which would also make more sense given Rashford still has two years left on his United contract.

For now, though, Michael Carrick has brought the England international back into his first-team plans.

Barcelona still have Marcus Rashford on their radar

Marcus Rashford enjoyed an impressive loan spell in Spain last season. He finished with 28 goal contributions across all competitions, but Barcelona decided against paying the €30 million option that would have made his move permanent.

Instead, they signed Anthony Gordon from Newcastle United.

The situation has changed since then. Robert Lewandowski and Ferran Torres have both left Barcelona, leaving them looking for more options in attack.

Their main target is reportedly Julian Alvarez, although Atletico Madrid have repeatedly made it clear they don’t want to sell the forward to their domestic rivals.

That could leave Rashford back in the conversation.

Barcelona’s interest therefore appears to depend partly on what happens with Julian Alvarez. Should they fail to make that deal happen, a second spell for Rashford in Catalonia could become a serious possibility.

From United’s point of view, however, there is no clear indication that they are trying to get rid of him.

United players want Marcus Rashford to stay

Carrick has welcomed Rashford back since the forward returned to the squad and says he has settled in well.

“He’s our player, you know, and he’s come back great. He’s just like any other player,” Carrick explained. “I’ve known Marcus a long time and, you know, he gives us something a little bit different. And he’s been in great spirits since he’s been back.”

That is not the only positive message Rashford has received.

Harry Maguire has also made it clear that United’s players would rather see their team-mate remain at Old Trafford.

“As players, we hope he stays because if he does, he is a big asset to have. He can improve us for sure.”

Maguire knows exactly what Rashford can bring after playing alongside him for years.

“I’ve played with Marcus for numerous years and I know that playing against him and playing with him in training is going to help us.”

Rashford’s situation is far from the one he left behind. He has returned from Barcelona with a strong season under his belt, while Carrick appears willing to give him another opportunity. Everything could now depend on how Barcelona’s pursuit of Alvarez develops. Until then, Rashford remains a Manchester United player.
