Manchester United have contacted Alejandro Balde’s camp as Michael Carrick’s side step up their search for a new left-back before the transfer window closes.
Fabrizio Romano reports that Man Utd have held calls with Balde’s representatives over recent days to establish whether the Barcelona defender could leave and what would be required to make a transfer possible.
The 22-year-old is currently happy at Barcelona, so there is no suggestion yet that an agreement is close. However, the contact represents a significant step beyond United simply monitoring another left-back option.
Alejandro Balde gives Man Utd another left-back route
Romano describes a new left-back as United’s next transfer priority following their work to sign Carlos Baleba from Brighton.
That position has been under consideration throughout the summer.
United previously approached Newcastle United over Lewis Hall, but ReadManUtd reported that their enquiry was rejected. Newcastle’s reluctance to sell has left Carrick’s recruitment team assessing alternatives.
They have also made an enquiry for Club Brugge defender Joaquin Seys, who represents a younger and potentially cheaper option.
Balde would provide a very different opportunity.
The Spain international came through Barcelona’s academy and has already passed 100 senior appearances for the club. Barcelona’s official profile records 47 appearances, one goal and eight assists during the 2024/25 campaign.
His contract also runs until June 2028, putting Barcelona in a strong negotiating position should United decide to progress their interest.
For now, the player’s own position could be the biggest obstacle.
Romano says Balde is happy at Barcelona despite United making contact with his camp. There has been no report of a bid or formal club-to-club negotiations.
United have nevertheless established whether a deal could potentially be opened.
With their pursuit of Hall proving difficult, Balde has now emerged as another serious name to watch as Carrick attempts to address one of the remaining gaps in his squad.
