Man Utd handed huge Alejandro Balde boost after Barcelona decision

Manchester United have been handed a major boost in their pursuit of Alejandro Balde after Barcelona left the defender out of their squad for Sunday night’s La Liga opener against Elche.

The development comes just hours after ReadManUtd reported that United had made contact over a potential move for Balde, with the 22-year-old’s future at Barcelona becoming increasingly uncertain.

Spanish outlet AS reports that Balde’s omission represents another step towards a possible move to the Premier League, specifically naming Manchester United as a potential destination.

Alejandro Balde Man Utd opportunity grows

Balde had previously been reluctant to leave his boyhood club despite United making contact with his representatives.

The situation now appears considerably less certain.

Fabrizio Romano reported on Sunday that Balde, Marc Casado and Hector Fort had all been left out of Barcelona’s matchday squad and each had a chance of leaving before the transfer window closes.

Barcelona manager Hansi Flick subsequently provided an eye-catching explanation for Balde’s absence.

“I spoke with Balde this morning and told him that I think he’s not here at 100%, clear your mind and then we’ll talk,” Flick said, as reported by Barca Blaugranes.

Those comments represent significant progression from United’s position earlier on Sunday.

Luke Shaw pressure increases after Hull defeat

A new left-back already looks increasingly important for Michael Carrick following United’s disastrous opening-day defeat against Hull City.

Wayne Rooney heavily criticised Luke Shaw’s defending during the 2-0 loss, describing one error as “schoolboy defending”.

Balde would offer Carrick a younger and considerably quicker alternative on the left, while also providing competition during a season in which United return to the Champions League.

There is no indication yet that United have reached an agreement with Barcelona or submitted a formal offer.

But Balde being left out of Barcelona’s first competitive squad of the season, coupled with Flick’s public comments, makes his situation one to watch closely before the transfer deadline.
