Man Utd draw Brighton at Old Trafford in Carabao Cup third round

Manchester United have been drawn at home to Brighton in the third round of the Carabao Cup.

It is a tough tie for Michael Carrick’s side, with Brighton returning to Old Trafford after their 2-1 FA Cup victory over United in January. This time, Manchester United will be hoping for a very different result.

United are among the seeded teams for the draw because of their involvement in European competition. Their Champions League commitments mean the tie will have to be played in the week commencing September 14.

Brighton await United in first Carabao Cup test

The meeting is one of five ties involving two Premier League clubs. Liverpool will face Tottenham, while Arsenal travel to Ipswich. Coventry City host Aston Villa and Sunderland have been drawn against Hull City.

For Carrick, this will be his first domestic cup tie since taking charge on a permanent basis. United will want to avoid another early exit after last season’s disappointing Carabao Cup campaign.

United were knocked out by Grimsby Town after a 2-2 draw ended in a penalty shootout.

The last time United lifted the trophy was in 2023 when United beat Newcastle United 2-0 in the final at Wembley. Manchester City are the current holders after they sealed the win over Arsenal 2-0 last season.

The other third-round ties include Crystal Palace against Middlesbrough, Manchester City versus Norwich City and Everton against Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Carrick’s first Carabao Cup assignment won’t be an easy one but he will be hoping for an improved one from last season.
