Manchester United at crossroads over Mason Mount

Manchester United midfielder Mason Mount has failed to ever get going at Old Trafford, and reports from The Athletic suggest the Englishman could be on his way out this summer.

The 27-year-old has played just 18 Premier League games so far this season, and many of those came under Ruben Amorin, as he has missed a month with an injury under interim manager Michael Carrick.

The Red Devils are thought to want to recoup some of the money they paid on Mount as his contract enters its final two years this summer. But convincing a club to pay up could prove difficult given his injury-prone spell in Manchester.

Mount’s Misery

Mount arrived at United from Chelsea in the summer of 2023 in a £60m plus add-ons deal. The Englishman had been a superstar at Stamford Bridge, displaying attacking flair and helping the Blues lift the Champions League in the 2020/21 season.

When Mount arrived, he was viewed as having high potential and someone who could offer a threat in the final third alongside Bruno Fernandes, though that has not been the case.

During his three seasons at the Red Devils, he has scored just five times in the Premier League, with three of those coming this season, and he has yet to register a league assist.

On top of failing to perform on the pitch, he has been plagued by a series of injuries which have kept him out of the side for many months.

Mount hasn’t been favoured under Carrick. Although he has been injured for most of the time the Englishman has been in the dugout, when he has been in the squad, he has played just two league minutes, both late substitute appearances against Manchester City and Bournemouth.

With Fernandes having one of his best seasons in England, having registered 24 goal contributions, it seems like a long way back for the 27-year-old.

As the club looks towards the transfer window, offering better competition to the Portuguese outlet seems to be on the horizon.

Whether Carrick remains in the hot seat won’t affect Mount’s future, as they look set to attack the window, with emphasis on bringing in new midfielders.

There have been a host of midfielders linked to the club in recent weeks, such as Carlos Baleba, Elliot Anderson and Sandro Tonali.

Fernandes looks set to remain in the midfield, unless teams from the Saudi Pro League come sniffing again, while Kobbie Mainoo has signed a new deal at Old Trafford and continues to display his class.

Casemiro announced he would be leaving the club at the end of the campaign, and the names mentioned look like replacements for the Brazilian.

However, the over-reliance on the Portuguese superstar will play in the minds of the United hierarchy this summer. He will turn 32 in September, and competing in Europe will mean more minutes on his legs.

Mount’s dissapointing performances and injury issues seem like a good time to try to move him on, in search of a more reliable option.
