- Man Utd initiate contact with West Ham
- Reds want quick Mateus Fernandes deal
- Real Madrid latest club showing interest
Manchester United are reportedly keen to get a deal for West Ham midfielder Mateus Fernandes done without unnecessary delay, as Michael Carrick looks to reshape his midfield ahead of a return to Champions League football.
According to SullyTalkz on Roundtable, United and West Ham have started club-to-club talks over a potential transfer, with the Red Devils having turned their full attention to Fernandes following the completion of the Ederson signing from Atalanta.
The move feels like a natural next step in Carrick’s midfield rebuild, and the manager himself is said to be a key driver behind it. Carrick is a big admirer of Fernandes and would welcome him to Old Trafford, which could prove a significant factor in getting the deal over the line.
Man Utd pursue Matues Fernandes deal
United are overhauling Carrick’s midfield ahead of Casemiro leaving the club, and Manuel Ugarte also expected to depart. Those exits leave a significant gap that United are now moving to fill.
Fernandes has long been on United’s radar, and the player’s own stance has never been in doubt. The West Ham midfielder remains keen on a move to Old Trafford.
However, the path to completing the deal may not be entirely smooth. There is currently internal chaos at the London Stadium following David Sullivan’s departure, which could complicate or delay any potential agreement.
On the financial side, United are not willing to be held to ransom. The club have no desire to pay the reported £80 million asking price, and are equally keen to avoid the deal dragging on into a drawn-out saga.
That desire to move quickly and cleanly reflects the broader urgency around United’s summer business as they prepare for a demanding return to European football’s top table. Recent reports suggest Real Madrid have joined the growing list of clubs eyeing the Portuguese star.
A heavy rebuild
Even with Ederson and Fernandes potentially both through the door, United are likely to need at least one further central midfielder to cope with the demands of the Champions League alongside their Premier League commitments. The rebuild is well underway but there is still plenty of work to be done.
