Manchester United set for windfall after latest Mason Greenwood transfer update

Manchester United have been placed back on sell-on alert after Atletico Madrid reportedly made an enquiry for Mason Greenwood.

According to The Sun, Diego Simeone’s side have checked on the Marseille forward while assessing attacking options around the future of Julian Alvarez. Yahoo Sports also relayed claims that Marseille are demanding around €50m for Greenwood.

That figure matters at Old Trafford. When Greenwood left United for Marseille in 2024, Sky Sports reported that the deal included a significant sell-on clause, thought to be between 40 and 50 per cent.

Greenwood Race Could Sharpen United’s Transfer Budget

United are not driving the negotiation, but they have a clear financial interest in Marseille extracting maximum value if Atletico move from enquiry to bid.

A €50m sale would not transform the entire summer plan, yet it could still create useful headroom for Michael Carrick’s recruitment team.

The timing is notable because United have already been forced to stay disciplined in midfield and attack. ReadManUtd recently examined why Real Madrid’s stance has blocked one United move, and any unexpected sell-on income would strengthen the club’s hand without adding another outgoing from the senior squad.

Atletico’s interest is still at enquiry stage, so this remains a watch rather than a windfall. For United, though, Greenwood’s market has become one of the quieter financial subplots of the window: uncomfortable, complicated, but potentially valuable.
