Man Utd’s Third Midfielder Hunt: Kone, Joao Gomes And Tchouameni Explained

Manchester United’s midfield rebuild is not finished. Andrey Santos has arrived from Chelsea, Youri Tielemans underwent his medical on Tuesday after United triggered his Aston Villa release clause, and the club’s hierarchy has been explicit that a third addition is still the plan. As of 14 July 2026, three names dominate the conversation: Roma’s Manu Kone, Wolves’ Joao Gomes and Real Madrid’s Aurelien Tchouameni. Here is everything that is actually confirmed, contested or still up in the air.

Why Do Manchester United Still Need A Third Midfielder?

United’s pursuit of a third midfielder followed the collapse of a £38m deal for Atalanta’s Ederson, whose transfer fell apart after United’s medical team flagged concerns during a follow-up examination, according to Sky Sports. That forced Michael Carrick’s side to pivot: Santos arrived for £48m plus £2m in add-ons from Chelsea, and Tielemans followed on a bargain £35m release clause.

According to Sky Sports’ own data analysis of United’s midfield, published this week, the club’s existing options – Bruno Fernandes, Kobbie Mainoo, Mason Mount, Santos and Tielemans – all rank outside the Premier League’s top 25 for distance covered per 90 minutes, with Mainoo the closest at 26th. That, per the report, is the specific gap United’s director of football Jason Wilcox is trying to fill with the club’s next signing.

The search for a third midfielder is also a story of missed opportunities elsewhere. United were priced out of a trio of more expensive targets – Sandro Tonali, Mateus Fernandes and Elliot Anderson – who moved for a combined £301m this summer, with Anderson going to Manchester City for £116m and Fernandes joining Tottenham for £85m, according to TEAMtalk. Co-owners INEOS were unwilling to match those fees, which is part of why the club’s midfield rebuild has instead centred on release clauses, medical-driven pivots and value targets like Kone, Gomes and Baleba rather than a single marquee arrival.

Where Do Manchester United’s Talks With Manu Kone Stand?

Roma head coach Gian Piero Gasperini told Rai Radio Uno that his club “need to balance the books” and that there would be “more clarity in the coming weeks” over Kone’s future, in comments relayed by TEAMtalk. Separately, Gazzetta dello Sport reported that Kone’s agent has been in England for several days holding talks with Premier League clubs, with Roma’s asking price set at around €60m (£51m) – a figure that lines up with Corriere dello Sport’s report that Roma rejected a €40m Atletico Madrid bid for the same player.

But the picture is not straightforward. The Athletic’s Carl Anka said on the Talk of the Devils podcast that, having checked with sources close to the club, “Manu Kone is NOT on Manchester United’s shortlist” as things stand. That directly complicates the version of events coming out of Rome, and both takes are logged here rather than smoothed over.

Why Are Liverpool Trying To Hijack United’s Move For Joao Gomes?

Wolves’ Joao Gomes became a live option for both Manchester clubs’ rivals after his proposed €45m move to Atletico Madrid collapsed when the Spanish club redirected funds towards Bernardo Silva instead. United made contact over a deal after their Ederson move fell through, but Liverpool have also approached Wolves, threatening to hijack the deal, per TEAMtalk. Gomes previously said in 2022, while still at Flamengo, that he would “love to play” for Liverpool – a historical detail that adds needle to the rivalry over his signature.

Could Aurelien Tchouameni Really Still Join Manchester United?

Tchouameni signed a new contract extension at Real Madrid through to 2031 earlier this month, ending what many assumed was United’s chance to sign him. But the story has not fully closed: Youri Tielemans‘ arrival has not stopped reporters continuing to link United with a £70m “premium” move for the France international, with one United reporter telling TEAMtalk that a Madrid contact suggested “they could still sell him” despite the new deal. David Ornstein, speaking on The Athletic FC Podcast, named Tchouameni alongside Brighton’s Carlos Baleba as the two “premium” options United could turn to if their other midfield targets fall through.

What Do The Numbers Say About Kone, Gomes And Tchouameni?

Player Club Age Reported valuation Contract situation Latest stance (14 July 2026)
Manu Kone AS Roma 25 ~€60m / £51m Under contract, Roma need to sell for FFP Agent in England holding talks; Gasperini open to sale; Athletic’s Anka disputes United interest
Joao Gomes Wolves 24 ~£38m-£40m (per collapsed Atletico fee) Under contract at Wolves United and Liverpool both in contact after Atletico deal collapsed
Aurelien Tchouameni Real Madrid 26 ~£70m New deal signed to 2031 United reportedly still exploring a move despite the new contract
Carlos Baleba Brighton 21 ~£70m (down from £100m demand) Under contract at Brighton United “admire enormously”; talks reportedly gone quiet since last summer

Sky Sports’ underlying data adds useful context: of the mobility-focused names in the conversation, Gomes ranked seventh among Premier League midfielders for tackles per 90 last season and third for possessions won in the defensive third, while Baleba ranked eighth for interceptions. Neither, notably, actually outran Tielemans over a match despite the reputation for legs. Everton’s James Garner, a former United academy player, was flagged in the same report as a stats-based outlier – he covered more total distance than any Premier League midfielder last season – though he has not been widely linked in recent transfer reporting.

Who Else Is On Jason Wilcox’s Shortlist?

Bournemouth’s Alex Scott and Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton have both been credited with United interest at various points this summer, but neither looks close: Bournemouth “insist he’s not for sale at any price” on Scott, per TEAMtalk, while the Wharton trail “has gone cold” with Palace using the £116m Elliot Anderson sale as a price benchmark. Lille’s Ayyoub Bouaddi has also been mentioned, with one report suggesting United remain “in talks” over a deal, though Lille reportedly want any deal to include a loan-back for the 18-year-old next season.

When Could Manchester United’s Third Midfielder Be Confirmed?

Ornstein said on The Athletic FC Podcast that he still expects “one more midfielder” to arrive, describing it as “always the plan,” while cautioning that United “have a clear vision” for the profile – someone who can “really cover ground” – rather than a fixed name. With Andrey Santos already training at Carrington and the Ederson deal now dead, the next fortnight looks set to decide whether Kone, Gomes, Tchouameni, Baleba or a later name completes United’s midfield rebuild.

Summer 2026 Midfield Rebuild: Key Facts

Has Manchester United agreed a fee for any of Kone, Gomes or Tchouameni? No. As of 14 July 2026, no fee has been agreed for any of the three – all reporting so far covers valuations, contact and shortlist status, not agreed terms.

Is Tchouameni still a realistic target after signing a new Real Madrid contract? Reporters remain split. He signed his extension to 2031 in early July, but United sources have told TEAMtalk a sale “could” still happen; no verified move has progressed beyond that.

Will Joao Gomes join Manchester United or Liverpool? Unresolved. Both clubs made contact after his Atletico Madrid move collapsed; no bid from either club has been confirmed as accepted by Wolves.

How much have Manchester United already spent on midfielders this summer? Around £83m combined on Andrey Santos (£48m plus £2m add-ons) and Youri Tielemans (£35m release clause), before any third signing.
