Manchester United have opened preliminary talks with Bruno Fernandes over a new contract as the club look to keep their captain at Old Trafford for the long term.
According to the Daily Mail, United have contacted Fernandes’ representatives despite still having time left on his current agreement. His deal expires next year, with the club holding an option to extend it by another 12 months.
United want to reward Bruno Fernandes
Fernandes’ latest performances have only underlined why Manchester United want to get the deal sorted.
The midfielder scored a hat-trick and provided an assist in Sunday’s 5-2 win over Ipswich Town, just days after being named PFA Player of the Year.
The 31-year-old has been hugely productive since arriving from Sporting CP in January 2020. He has 110 goals and 109 assists in 329 appearances for United, while his 21 Premier League assists last season set a new record.
United are expected to offer Fernandes fresh terms worth around £350,000 a week, along with a one-year extension.
Galatasaray have reportedly emerged as a serious admirer and are prepared to offer Fernandes a four-year contract, with wages that could almost double his current earnings.
Bruno Fernandes has already turned down a huge offer from Al Hilal, reportedly worth £200m, because he feels there is still unfinished business at Manchester United.
He has lifted the FA Cup and Carabao Cup since joining, but has also suffered two Europa League final defeats and another FA Cup final loss.
Keeping Bruno Fernandes isn’t simply about protecting his numbers but he remains the captain and the player around whom much of Michael Carrick‘s team is built.
They want Bruno Fernandes to stay.
