Former captain doesn’t rate Lewis Hall for Man Utd

Manchester United missed out on Lewis Hall this summer, and Roy Keane doesn’t believe the Newcastle defender would have been the right solution anyway.

Lewis Hall was one of the names Manchester United looked at while trying to strengthen at left-back. Newcastle United, though, never wanted to sell him and valued the player at more than £60 million.

Keane questions Lewis Hall’s defensive ability

Speaking about Lewis Hall, Keane was pretty clear about what he thinks United should have been looking for in the position.

“I don’t think Hall is the answer. He’s not bad, don’t get me wrong. I don’t think he’s a good defender.

“Of course, you want him to be comfortable in possession, but first and foremost, they can defend, because that’s what your challenge is now.

“Whatever it is with your attacking players, listen lads: two midfielders and an attacking four. Go and win us the game. But we’ve got to be solid defensively, even if it’s sacrificing being good on the ball.”

Manchester United eventually failed to sign any left-back and instead left with Luke Shaw as the only senior option. Harry Amass has also been kept after a window linking him to a move away from Manchester United.

United has hinted at using a number of other players in the position. Dalot and Mazroui have been used in the position previously so Michael Carrick can rely on them, but the lack of another established left-back remains one of the clearest gaps in the squad.

Michael Carrick will have to work with what he has for now, while Lewis Hall remains at Newcastle after United’s interest failed to result in a deal.
