- Manchester United is not alone in the race for Godts
- Godt’s situation and type of play match United’s needs
- Who will be the side’s next winger
Manchester United have their eyes on one of Europe’s most exciting young talents. Scouts from the club reportedly travelled to the Johan Cruyff Arena last week for Ajax’s clash with PSV Eindhoven to observe the player.
Despite the 2-2 draw, the player United are targeting stepped up to score the last-minute equaliser for interim manager Oscar Garcia’s side. With United’s European dream attained, the club has begun its hunt for attacking reinforcements.
The 3-2 victory over Liverpool was more than just three points for the side. Champions League qualification means massive financial gain, so the side has locked one of its targets, Mika Godts.
According to TEAMTalk, the Ajax winger has caught enough attention, and United have quoted a price. But there is also competition from Arsenal, Liverpool, and Chelsea.
Mika Godts’ fit at United
The timing has been perfect, as Godt’s profile is an ideal fit for the club’s left-sided option. And the discussions have reached the exploratory stage.
His agent Niels De Jonck said, “Together with Youri Baas, Godts should be Ajax’s next mega-transfer. The financial need to sell has disappeared in Amsterdam, but they won’t refuse a significant amount.”
Godts direct playing style, pace, and ability to beat defenders are his strengths. The Belgian winger has been outstanding, with 17 goals and 14 assists in all competitions.
Additionally, he is second in the Eredivisie Golden Boot chart, netting 17 times in the league. The 20-year-old made his senior debut in April 2023. But before that, he was a part of the academies of Anderlecht and Genk, before joining Ajax’s youth ranks in January 2023.
United have been told to pay £65million. Dutch newspaper AD adds that his price could drop further if Ajax fails to qualify for Europe.
United’s plans for their next winger
United are already preparing themselves for the next season’s Champions League. Having Harry Maguire and Kobbie Mainoo sign new contracts already shows signs of how serious they are. Currently, Ajax is at serious risk of failing to qualify for next season’s Champions League, as they sit in 4th place. As the league only has three slots.
Amid plans for a squad revamp, United cannot ignore their £82 million investment in Antony from Ajax back in September 2022. With INEOS being in a better place now and the Dutch club operating within a more structured valuation framework, this move could play out very differently.
Finally, United scouts have left no stone unturned, from travelling to Italy to monitor Rafael Leão, and now in the Netherlands to assess the Belgian youngster. As the left-wing wishlist fills up, only one question remains: Who will make the move?
