- Man Utd have been eyeing Carlos Baleba
- Laurie Whitwell suggests he’s no longer a priority
- Cameroonian’s transfer fee likely an issue
Laurie Whitwell has given an update on Manchester United’s interest in Carlos Baleba. The Brighton & Hove Albion midfielder has been a long-term target.
United made an approach to Brighton for Baleba last summer but were told he wasn’t for sale. Reports indicated at the time that the Seagulls valued him at over £100m, per ESPN.
Baleba has endured an underwhelming season since then, failing to build on his promising 2024-25 campaign. The Cameroonian’s inconsistent form may well have led to the Reds ruling out a move for him this summer.
Man Utd have cooled Baleba interest
Whitwell delved into the situation regarding Baleba and hinted that United are no longer prioritising the player. He said on The Stretford Paddock podcast:
“Yeah. I was strong on it 2 or 3 months ago in the direction it was heading [possible signing] but it’s been a bit cooler since that point. […] United could look past the season he’s had and the different factors that went into it.”
United might have expected Brighton to lower their valuation of Baleba off the back of a dissapointing season. They seem to still be asking for a huge fee to part with the 22-year-old:
“Maybe Brighton are still demanding a significant amount of money which United doesn’t match United’s value. He definitely has been somebody they continue to monitor. Maybe they’ve decided to go a different way. It doesn’t feel warm.”
Baleba made 35 appearances across competitions this season but lost his place as an undisputed starter in Fabian Hurzeler’s team. He has just over two years left on his contract at the Amex Stadium.
The right call
If Brighton are holding out for a fee of over £50m for Baleba, it is a wise decision to look elsewhere. He definitely has an enticing profile that could help address Casemiro’s departure.
That said, the Cameroonian has been poor for most of the campaign and may have unfortunately played his way out of a move. There are so many options on United’s midfield shortlist that are fresh off impressive performances.
Mateus Fernandes is one of them, and the West Ham United midfielder is thought to cost around £60-70m. He is open to joining the Reds and that feels like a more likely signing.
The dream signing is Aurelien Tchouameni, who is now at the top of INEOS’ wishlist. A move could take place if Real Madrid indicates they are prepared to sell.
United are already close to completing a deal for Atalanta’s Ederson after agreeing on a £38m deal. The Brazilian isn’t the marquee midfield signing required to address Casemiro’s departure.
