Man Utd set for fresh Garnacho windfall as Chelsea open exit door

Manchester United could receive another financial boost this summer if Chelsea complete the sale of Alejandro Garnacho.

Chelsea are reportedly prepared to listen to permanent offers for the Argentina winger after a difficult first season at Stamford Bridge.

Garnacho joined Chelsea from United for £40million last summer, with the Old Trafford club retaining a 10 per cent sell-on clause as part of the agreement.

The Guardian reported that clause when the original transfer was completed, meaning United would be entitled to a share of any future fee Chelsea receive for the 22-year-old.

Reports now place Chelsea’s valuation at around £42.5m to £43m. A sale at that level could therefore earn United approximately £4.25m, depending on the precise terms of the clause.

Garnacho sale could strengthen United’s budget

Garnacho struggled to establish himself during Chelsea’s disappointing campaign and has now been linked with Roma.

The Italian club are reportedly more interested in a loan with an option to buy, while Chelsea would prefer a permanent departure.

No transfer has yet been agreed for Garnacho, despite the wording used in some headlines. The potential second United payday instead relates to Mason Greenwood, whose proposed move from Marseille to Fenerbahce is further advanced.

ReadManUtd recently covered Greenwood’s expected Fenerbahce transfer and United’s sell-on position.

United secured a sizeable clause when Greenwood left Old Trafford in 2024. ESPN reports Fenerbahce have agreed a deal with Marseille worth €42m plus bonuses, which would produce another notable payment for United.

Any Garnacho income would carry additional value under Profit and Sustainability Rules because he was developed by United after joining the academy from Atlético Madrid.

The initial £40m Chelsea fee was therefore recorded as almost entirely pure profit. Further sell-on income would provide another useful accounting benefit as Michael Carrick’s squad rebuild continues.

Chelsea must first find a permanent buyer willing to meet their valuation.

Until then, United’s prospective payment remains a possibility rather than guaranteed income.
