Manchester United have reportedly informed Marseille that they will not activate their clause to re-sign Mason Greenwood.
Fabrizio Romano reports that Fenerbahçe and Marseille can now complete the formal steps required for Greenwood’s transfer.
The 24-year-old is expected to travel to Istanbul once the final agreement is signed.
United sold Greenwood to Marseille in 2024 and retained a significant financial interest in any future transfer.
The latest deal is therefore set to deliver more than £10m to Old Trafford through the sell-on clause.
Greenwood deal adds to Carrick’s transfer funds
United’s decision not to intervene removes one of the final obstacles before Greenwood joins Fenerbahçe.
Reports have placed the transfer package at around €42m, although figures have varied during negotiations. ESPN reported that the proposed structure would give Marseille around €28m before bonuses and other payments were distributed.
The exact value of United’s clause has also been reported differently. However, the latest update makes clear that the club expects to receive more than £10m.
ReadManUtd previously examined how Greenwood’s proposed move could deliver a major sell-on windfall.
That money could give Michael Carrick additional flexibility as United continue reshaping the squad.
The club have already invested heavily in midfield and still need to make decisions across several positions. Extra income from a player who is no longer part of the sporting plans would therefore be useful.
Greenwood has agreed terms with Fenerbahçe, while Marseille are preparing the final paperwork.
Barring a late problem, his move to Turkey should now be completed once the clubs finish the remaining formalities.
