Manchester United Appoint Connor King to First-Team Coaching Staff
Manchester United have announced the appointment of Connor King as assistant first-team goalkeeping coach, with the former Burnley man joining Michael Carrick’s backroom staff with immediate effect.
The Connor King Manchester United switch was already in motion before it became official, with King helping oversee the goalkeepers’ warm-up ahead of United’s 1-1 draw with Fulham.
His arrival adds a fresh face to a coaching group that has stayed largely settled since Michael Carrick took charge, and it comes during the international break.
Official Announcement Details and Connor King’s Coaching Background
King’s route into coaching has been a long one. He joined Burnley’s academy at just 11 years old, went on to earn caps for England at Under-16 level, and has held coaching roles at the Lancashire club since 2018. That background gives him a detailed understanding of developing young goalkeepers, a skill set United clearly see value in as they look to strengthen the department.
Craig Mawson had been the only senior coaching staff member kept on when Carrick took over from Ruben Amorim. King now joins him, adding depth to the goalkeeping setup at United.
Goalkeeping Setup and Michael Carrick’s Full Backroom Team
Carrick’s full backroom staff now runs to six names:
Steve Holland, Jonathan Woodgate, Jonny Evans, Travis Binnion, Craig Mawson and Connor King.
It’s a group that blends coaching experience with recent United connections, and it gives supporters a clearer picture of Michael Carrick’s management structure at Old Trafford.
Back in August, Carrick was asked whether he might look to bring in a set-piece coach. His answer was blunt.
“No, we’re good with the coaching group,” he said, before adding, “I never said that.”
Those comments referred specifically to set-piece coaching rather than the goalkeeping department, and King’s arrival now shows Carrick is willing to add to his staff where he sees a genuine need.
Premier League Position and Upcoming Fixture Timeline
The appointment lands with United sitting 12th in the Premier League table. Five points from matches against Hull, Ipswich Town, Everton, Manchester City and Fulham leave the club with plenty of work still to do this season, as we set out in our analysis of Carrick’s recent talking points.
There’s now a 20-day international break before United are back in action. Their next fixture is against Tottenham at Old Trafford on October 10, giving King his first taste of a proper matchday build-up with his new club. The move was first reported by Manchester Evening News.
