Mick Brown, a former Manchester United assistant and scout, believes the club may be better off without academy prospect JJ Gabriel.
Speaking to Football Insider, Brown addressed the JJ Gabriel Manchester United situation directly, questioning whether the 15 year old’s conduct has unsettled team-mates at Old Trafford. His comments follow reports that United rejected a request from Gabriel to have his registration cancelled. Several of Europe’s biggest clubs are said to be watching his situation closely.
Mick Brown Questions JJ Gabriel Role at Manchester United
Brown did not hold back when asked about Gabriel’s future at the club. He said:
“There is the suggestion, of course, that Man United might be better off without JJ Gabriel.” Brown then turned to the wider picture around the teenager’s status at the club.
“Regardless of his obvious talent, this situation has called into question his character and that of the people around him, and is that the type of player you want around the club?”
It is a striking question from someone who spent years working within United’s football department. It sets the tone for everything else Brown had to say.
Brown Details Academy Dressing Room Concerns and Transfer Links
Brown said his concerns come from watching Gabriel play for United’s youth sides in recent weeks. He told Football Insider:
“It’s sad, because the boy is very talented and it’s a shame how this situation has played out in recent times. Interestingly enough, since all of this has kicked off, I’ve watched him closely playing for the academy sides and one thing that interests me is his teammates’ reactions.”
“When somebody scores for the Under-21s, all the players go running over, they’re jumping and hugging each other and all of that. But a few times when JJ Gabriel has scored, yes they go and celebrate with him, give him a high five, and then they all trot back and he doesn’t seem to get the same reception.”
Brown added his own theory next.
“Now, I might be reading too much into it, but from my point of view I have to wonder whether his actions have caused issues in the dressing room.”
He also pointed to how some view Gabriel’s involvement in first team training, calling it “an arrogance and attitude thing” in the eyes of certain observers.
According to media reports, first detailed in a Manchester Evening News report, United recently turned down a request from Gabriel to have his registration cancelled. The same reports claim Bayern Munich, Real Madrid and Barcelona are all interested in signing the teenager.
Brown was careful to qualify his own reading of the situation. He added:
“Like I said, it’s a shame and maybe I’m reading too much into it. But it does add up to that idea that maybe they’re better off without him.”
Carrick’s Squad Context and European Transfer Rumours
The reports land at a difficult moment for United. The club sit 12th in the Premier League under Michael Carrick heading into the international break. That position will do little to ease supporter frustration if United do lose a promising academy player to a European rival.
Barcelona’s reported interest is worth watching given their own squad situation. Alejandro Balde has featured for only 12 minutes across all competitions for Barcelona this season. Mundo Deportivo has reported that he could reassess his future there this winter if his playing time does not improve. It shows even Europe’s biggest academies are not immune to the sort of frustration Brown suggests may be building around Gabriel at United.
Our latest United talking points update covers more on how situations like Balde’s are feeding into wider transfer chatter this month, and where United fit into that picture.
Next Steps for Gabriel and Manchester United Academy
Manchester United have made no official comment on Gabriel’s situation. Brown’s remarks remain his own assessment rather than confirmed club position. Nothing suggests a transfer is close, and no window opens until January.
United’s academy has produced senior talent before, something our academy tournament coverage touched on when the club’s youngsters last competed on the continental stage.
Whatever the truth behind the dressing room claims, the JJ Gabriel Manchester United story looks unlikely to fade quickly. Three of Europe’s leading clubs are said to be circling.
