Chelsea Legend Concerned Cole Palmer Wants out amid Manchester United Rumours

  • Manchester United could make a move for Palmer in the coming year
  • Palmer is feeling homesick in London
  • Joe Cole exacerbates the situation

Boyhood Manchester United fan Cole Palmer is reportedly now edging towards a potentially defining move, with Chelsea legend Joe Cole voicing concern over the playmaker’s future.

The Blues enjoyed a relatively positive campaign last season, lifting both the UEFA Conference League and the Club World Cup, defeating Paris Saint-Germain in the final. However, this season has unravelled.

Chelsea currently lingers in sixth. The club parted ways with Enzo Maresca, and although Liam Rosenior initially steadied the ship, form has since ebbed away, leaving them six points adrift of the top four with seven games to play.

Meanwhile, Arsenal knocked them out in the Carabao Cup semi-finals, and PSG dismantled them in the Champions League round of 16, running up eight goals across two legs.

Palmer to leave?

Palmer has navigated a stop-start season. A groin injury disrupted his momentum, and whispers of a return to Manchester—fuelled by suggestions of homesickness—have begun to gather pace.

However, Rosenior has moved swiftly to quash that narrative:

“I’ve had numerous conversations with Cole, and he seems and is very, very happy to be here. He is a huge part of our long-term plans, he’s an outstanding player. Every player goes through difficult moments in their career with injuries, but that is no indication of his quality.”

The Chelsea midfielder grew up supporting Manchester United, and the club now keeps a close watch on his situation at Stamford Bridge.

Ben Jacobs, however, told The United Stand that

“Palmer is concentrating on driving Chelsea into the Champions League and forcing his way into Tuchel’s England squad. Anyone trying to get him this summer will be wasting their time. Only Palmer and Moises Caicedo are untouchable players at Chelsea. They are on long-term contracts, which makes it extremely difficult to prise them away from Stamford Bridge.”

Elsewhere, Enzo Fernandez has added another layer of intrigue. Following Chelsea’s Champions League exit, he admitted to ESPN that uncertainty clouds his future at Stamford Bridge.

Rosenior has since responded decisively, excluding the Argentine from the next two fixtures after he, in the manager’s eyes, “crossed a line” with those remarks.

Joe Cole: Palmer Might Want Out

Joe Cole, however, has now thrown fuel on the fire by giving a damning assessment of Chelsea. Their former winger said on The Dressing Room podcast:

“You can say what you like about the Roman Abramovich era but it was built with one thing in mind and that was to win trophies… (This ownership are) not buying players to win games of football, you’re buying players as an asset and I don’t think that ever works.”

He added:

“They’re frustrated. And you get into that position now, where the best players are going to start going… If you’re Cole Palmer you’re thinking, I could go and play anywhere in the world. Like, what’s happening here? Do you know what I mean?”

Palmer’s contract doesn’t expire until 2033 and it would take a record-breaking fee to prise him away from Stamford Bridge. He has appeared 25 times across competitions this season, posting 10 goals and three assists.
