Rio Ferdinand has urged Manchester United to hijack Chelsea’s move for Danny Welbeck. The former defender wants a Danny Welbeck return to Man Utd, arguing that Old Trafford can offer Champions League football next season.
Chelsea are exploring a deal for the 35-year-old after his career-best Premier League campaign with Brighton. Welbeck scored 13 league goals and remains under contract with Albion until summer 2027.
Ferdinand responded directly to the transfer report on X.
“Welbs… Ignore + come back home! Champions League football next season in Manchester,” he wrote in his message to Welbeck.
Welbeck came through United’s academy and made 142 senior appearances for the club. He scored 29 goals before joining Arsenal in September 2014.

United already have Benjamin Sesko and Joshua Zirkzee available through the middle. Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha can also cover the position when Michael Carrick changes his attacking shape.
However, Sesko has been recovering from a shin problem during pre-season. ReadManUtd recently covered the striker’s expected physical transformation as he works towards full fitness before the new campaign.
Welbeck would bring a different profile. He knows the club, has extensive Premier League experience and could accept a supporting role behind Sesko.
His leadership could also help Carrick’s younger players during a season involving Champions League football. Welbeck has remained productive at Brighton and recorded the best league scoring return of his career last term.
There is currently no indication that United are preparing an offer. Ferdinand’s message represents a transfer recommendation rather than confirmation of talks or interest from Old Trafford.
Chelsea remain the club actively pursuing Welbeck, with Brighton open to considering a suitable proposal. A Danny Welbeck return to Man Utd would require United to enter the race and convince their former academy striker to reject Stamford Bridge.
