Manchester United star Kobbie Mainoo has signed a new contract at the club, keeping him at Old Trafford until June 2031. The 21-year-old has grown into one of the most important players in United’s squad since his debut on 10 January 2023.

That’s despite a 14-month spell where he was largely disregarded by Portuguese head coach Ruben Amorim. Mainoo came close to leaving the club, with Amorim favouring the bespoke Casemiro–Bruno Fernandes partnership in his 3-4-3 system.

However, following the Portuguese coach’s dismissal in January, Michael Carrick has taken the side forward with authority, and Mainoo has returned to prominence. His signing could shape the next five years for Manchester United, as they look to build around him in pursuit of a Premier League-winning side.

Five More Years of Kobbie Mainoo

Mainoo spoke passionately about his decision to sign a new deal with his boyhood club. He told club media:

“Manchester United has always been my home; this special club means everything to my family. I have grown up seeing the impact that our club has on our city, and I relish the responsibility that comes with wearing this shirt.”

He added:

“From The Cliff, to Littleton Road, to Carrington and ultimately Old Trafford, the journey so far has been incredible. I have the privilege of living my dream every single day, with the same relentless desire to succeed here as when I joined my first training session at the age of six.

Mainoo’s decision comes amid Carrick’s reign as interim coach, which concludes at the end of the season. But the English youngster sees the bigger picture, pointing out the project in place:

“We can all feel the momentum building inside the club. I am determined to step up and play my role in helping Manchester United to regularly fight for major trophies in the years ahead.”

Mainoo has made 26 appearances across competitions this season, posting three assists. He has enjoyed many memorable moments including scoring the winner in the 2024 FA Cup final win over Manchester City.

Wilcox: Mainoo is a Role Model

United’s director of football, Jason Wilcox, has also spoken with excitement over Mainoo committing his future to the club. He not only spoke highly of his abilities but also his connection to the academy:

“Kobbie is one of the most naturally gifted young footballers in the world. His technical ability, dedicated professionalism and humble personality make him the perfect role model for our young players and a true credit to our outstanding Academy system.

He added:

“We are delighted that Kobbie has extended his stay here and have full confidence that he will develop into one of the best players in the world, ready to play a pivotal role in a Manchester United team challenging for the biggest honours.”

With Mainoo now tied down for another five years, the club will look to bring in a new midfielder in the wake of Casemiro’s departure, aiming to find the right profile to complement both him and Fernandes.
