Manchester United endured a disappointing 0-0 draw against Sunderland on Saturday. This game made clear how much Michael Carrick and the club will miss Casemiro and how his absence affects the team.

The Red Devils’ engine room and the attacking frontline had an off day. The hero at the Stadium of Light was undoubtedly goalkeeper Senne Lammens.

Lammens’ two outstanding saves earned the side a crucial point, and he earned his 7th clean sheet. On the bigger picture, the game revealed their dependence on the Brazilian midfielder.

Getting to know how important the 34-year-old is shows his replacement has some huge shoes to fill. The club need to get it right in the transfer window.

Casemiro’s Influential Presence

United made five changes to the starting XI that defeated Liverpool 3-2 last weekend. The reshuffle led Carrick’s side to struggle on Wearside. Ahead of the game, speaking to MUTV, the interim manager said.

“Case, he’ll be fine for next week, it’s nothing major. Manu had a problem with his back in training, so that’s the issues ironed out.”

Carrick informed the media that the former Real Madrid midfielder would be back next week. He is expected to return to training ahead of the final home game of the season, against Nottingham Forest.

The Brazilian has been the side’s lucky charm this campaign. This season, the Red Devils failed to win in all four games he missed, losing three and drawing one.

Those defeats came against Manchester City, Brentford, and Aston Villa, while the draw came at Sunderland. At the Stadium of Light, the team delivered a poor performance, with Joshua Zirkzee enduring a difficult outing alongside Amad Diallo and Mason Mount.

With nine league goals this season, he is the joint second-highest scorer alongside Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo. Expected to return for the penultimate game, he could help United get back to winning ways and bow out on the perfect note.

United bids farewell to Casemiro

Next Sunday, United welcome Forrest for their final home game at Old Trafford. Though this season had no significant trophy moment, qualification for the Champions League is the biggest takeaway of the campaign.

Casemiro has made 159 appearances for the club, scoring 26 goals and providing 13 assists in all competitions. He joined in August 2022 in a deal worth up to £70 million. He helped the club lift two major trophies: the Carabao Cup in 2022/23 and the FA Cup in 2023/24.

His magnificent presence in the middle of the park was vital to qualifying for Europe. A win at home against the Reds next Sunday would be a great farewell for the Brazilian.
